Half-Decade Report:
Best Albums of 2000-2004
It
wasn't the best of times, it wasn't the worst of times. 2006 was a
year of comebacks both welcome (Cat Power) and lukewarm (Jay-Z);
vindictive triumphs (the Dixie Chicks); ambitious achievements
(Muse, My Chemical Romance); and massive, eye-opening career
retrospectives (Tom Waits). Most of all, though, 2006 was the year
we really, really thought we'd finally get to hear Guns N'
Roses' Chinese Democracy, only to be cruelly denied at the
11th hour (what are the odds?). Luckily we had lots of intriguing,
enthralling and sometimes just plain weird music to nurse us
through our crushing disappointment, from TV on the Radio to
Alejandro Escovedo to, uh, Joanna Newsom. So here's our
opinion, but what about yours? Who and what eased you through
the year that was? As always, our minds (and our mailboxes) are open. --
